Summary: Limited value, but temporarily fascinating nonetheless...
Comment: This device - little more than loosely-coiled flat spring steel, is touted as a fun and educational toy. My experiences have been less than spectacular, but it provided me with a few moments of diversion.
The primary purpose of the device is unknown to me - I suspect one holds the each end of the coil in one's hands and performs a simple rocking motion from side to side, which creates a pleasing sound and a curious sense of repetitive motion. This is quite a wonderful experience, not at all unpleasant, but the feeling passes rather quickly and I find I want to return to the latest issue of "Maxim" or reruns of "Friends".
My daughter, who is seven years old, informed me that one can place the coil at the head of the stairs and "flop" it over and down one stair (her words - I do not know the technical terminology, since the device did not come with release notes, a process flow, or a schematic). The device then uses the released energy of that initial movement to continue to "flop" down the stairs in a very lovely and entertaining way. Several satisfying moments went by as I did this, but again, I felt better served doing other things like shopping for Star Trek action figures or spraying grass killer on my neighbor's lawn.
Oddly, my seven year old can play with this device for hours. She enjoys it far more than I, so I have given it to her. They should market these toward younger people, who I suspect would enjoy them far more than adults.

Comment: You all may not know this but slinkys make a great device for birth control. Especially if taken orally... with a stick of butter. ... yep

Comment: Great classic toy, durable, fun! We have bought the plastic ones several times and they get tangled within a day or 2. This classic and original slinky is the best!

Summary: Science Project, Maybe?
Comment: I the Original Slinky as a "change of scenario" from the usual therapy toys for my (at the time) 3-4 year old neurologically damaged child who often has problems identifying with words, books, toys and other objects. She is learning to walk and talk and is making progress in her own way. I have videos and pictures to prove it. She loved me showing her how the toy worked, kind of like a Yo-Yo, but the complexity was a bit much when she tried it. I let her here and there, but mostly keep it put up for her until she's a little more dexterious and can understand how it works. Great down a flight of long stairs !!! I would highly recommend it for a grade school science fair project in physics along with other objects to explain energy and motion. But for my child, it will come in time as to how she will be able to use it. It didn't cost enough to concern me, I just wanted to try her reaction to the toy. LLO'C
